The shell provides a number of facilities related to defining model input, choosing alternative computation routines for certain processes within a model, running a model and presenting tabular and graphical output. Emphasis of a part of the shell is on the ability to make extensive analyses of the behaviour of the model vs. observed data. For this purpose the model can be run several times with slight modifications in chosen parameters. Subsequently state-variables can be either simulated or forced (using observed data as forcing function). This application is called 'Model/Experiment Studies'. For the immediate purpose of supporting the activities in the agro-ecosystems theme, the shell provides a number of facilities related to defining model input, running a model, and presenting output including a limited statistical analysis on a number of pre-defined output variables. Emphasis here is on the ability to select a large number of combinations of input files, to store outputs, to quantify year-to-year and site-to-site variation and to perform uncertainty- and risk-analyses. This application has been labelled 'Regional Studies'. A subroutine library is envisaged, consisting of modules each of which describes a process. Various alternative modules can be developed to describe a given process (e.g. potential transpiration); observed time series can replace such modules. Users can then build their models on the basis of well defined and documented elements, depending on their own level of observations. Most likely, a user interface to such library will be developed as part of the shell, too (a first start has been made by defining modules for the accompanying ORYZA_N* model). For the database component, the viewpoint is taken that the basic data should be stored and made accessible in bare ASCII format. Database facilities of the shell are used, however, to manipulate and prepare input sets, and to store and analyse outputs.
