Abstract:
PROBE (Prototype Biomass and Evapotranspiration model) is a vegetation growth
and soils water-balance simulation model that includes an iterative numerical
procedure for incorporating remotely sensed information. The purpose of the
model is to assist resource managers in estimating regional evapotranspiration
and biomass production.
The model requires mean daily air temperature, humidity, wind speed and total
daily solar radiation as input data. Surface reflectance and temperature data
are required from remote sensing sources [e.g. Landsat Multi-Spectral Scanner
(MSS) or Thematic Mapper (TM) or NOAA's Advanced Very High Resolution
Radiometer (AVHRR)]. The model provides daily estimates of biomass production,
evapotranspiration and soil moisture. The model may be incorporated into a
Geographic Information System (GIS) for producing estimates of vegetation and
soil water-balance at regional scale (Maas et al., 1992).

VI. Additional remarks
This model is one of only a few in this survey that use GIS and remotesensing data. Execution of the model is limited only by the available remotesensing information. This model addresses the USGCRP desire to integrate GISand models.
