Abstract:
Simulation of water movement in soils, in which the student must specify soil type, hydraulic
properties and boundary conditions.
SWIM is a software package for simulating water infiltration and movement
in soils. Water is added as precipitation and removed by runoff, drainage,
evaporation from the soil surface and transpiration by vegetation. The
simulator assumes that conditions can be treated as horizontally uniform,
that flow is descibed by the Richards equation and that soil hydraulic
properties can be described by simple functions. While this is adequate for
many purposes, there are situations where it is not and the simulation
results should never be applied uncritically.
