Abstract:
The stimulation of photosynthesis at higher CO2 concentration is the fact repeatedly observed in case of short-term experiment at a single leaf level. We scaled up from leaf to globe and come to conclusion that CO2-induced increase in the terrestrial Net Primary Production (NPP) may be described by the same simple formula that was heavily used over last two decades: NPP(Ca)=NPP0*[1+b*ln(Ca/Co)], where Ca is atmospheric CO2 concentration. We also concluded that NPP0=61.6 Pg C/yr and b=0.35 for C0=340 ppmv. Modellers rarely convert their results into simple formulas to avoid the false impression that their conclusions remain valid outside the domain of model settings. To maintain the balance between credibility and usability of our results, we recorded CD-R containing the information about the settings of our model. This CD-R contains the global grid (half to half degree) of NPP produced by our model, the global grids of environmental conditions that determine NPP, and the FORTRAN programs that we used in calc ulations. Proceeding from this, one can repeat our calculation, trace our logic, and if necessary modify our assumptions for making its own judgment from the same data.
